Emancipation is the central theme of this book. You can easily see that if start reading "The Awakening" and her Short Stories written by Kate Chopin. The emancipation views were at the beginning of 20th century very offensive. Even today, many people can think about them as about some radical theory. So this book is worth reading for that reason alone.
However, apart from the subject, the Kate Chopin writes really strong and nice. She knows how to create a certain atmosphere and then one moment change it. For the reader, it can be shocking, but it is some kind of good shock.
The "The Awakening" novel is about Edna Pontellier who lived for some time under oppressive circumstances and now she changed. With full consciousness, she rebelled against the marital and social barriers. It's fascinating to watch how Edna realizes that she does not want to live longer by ancient rules. You feel much sympathy for her and some other characters with similar problems.
The Awakening and Selected Short Stories by Kate Chopin is little-known work of art, unfortunately. But when you give it can give you more confidence. Especially if you a woman.
