The Land of Oz series has been wildly popular ever since the very first book came around more than 100 years ago, and The Patchwork Girl of Oz is most definitely one of the best novels in the Oz universe. In the previous "chapter", magic was put to good use - to successfully isolate Oz from all the other worlds.
L. Frank Baum, the legendary author, used this trick to end the 6-story-long series, but was forced to get back to it 'cause he had been struggling with finances at the time, which resulted in the man writing 8 more books. Ojo, a little Munchkin lad, is pretty much the unluckiest person in the world. He's been living with his Uncle in the wild forest for as long as he can remember, but, as the two are about to starve from death, he visits the neighbor, a powerful magician, and his uncle's good-old friend.
That's how he becomes witness to Dr. Pipt's very special Powder - that of life - which is capable of breathing life into any object it touches. You just gotta know the magic words to use the powder properly. The man's wife used her husband's unique creation to turn a routine patchwork quilt into a walking-talking servant that's taking care of all the chores without asking any unnecessary and/or annoying questions.

But, Ojo messes up all of her carefully-planned "ingredients" for the servant, and it turns into a tomboy, a flexible, motivated and poetry-loving girl. She starts to "dance around" and accidently hits a bottle filled with the Petrification formula, another one of the Doc's inventions. The liquid turns the scientist, his lovely wife, and Ojo's Uncle into marble statues!
