The book depicts events that took place in France during the years of the reign of the young Louis XIV and in England when the Civil War was almost over. The story begins with D'Artagnan still being a mere lieutenant after 20 years of loyal service. He had a great future ahead of him, but now he's almost a nobody.
On the other hand, he's an ambitious, honorable and gifted man, and the queen of Austria owes him, which means he might just get his happy ending after all. France is on the brink of a revolution, and people are fed up with Cardinal Mazarin and his wicked ways. The queen has forgotten about the brave musketeer and when Mazarin tells her that he was the one that served her with valiancy 2 decades ago, she gives him a diamond ring to pass on to D'Artagnan and to thank him for his service.
However, Mazarin tells the musketeer that he is to return to her service for the ring and orders him to go out there and to find his three friends. But he hasn't seen any of them for ages, and all three men - Athos, Porthos, and Aramis - managed to build quite impressive lives for themselves. That means it's gonna be hard for D'Artagnan to persuade them to join him once again and to serve Queen Anne.
