Benjamin L. D’Ooge came from a Huguenot family who emigrated from the Netherlands to the USA around 1851 and settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His parents were the teacher Leonard D’Ooge and Johanna D’Ooge, b. Quintus; his older brother was the philologist Martin Luther D’Ooge (1839–1915).
