The story begins in Barcelona right after the Spanish Civil War. One day a father takes his young son Daniel's to the secret Cemetery of Forgotten Books. It is an enormous library filled with ancient and almost forgotten books.

The titles and library itself deeply fascinate Daniel Sempere. Moreover, he receives information that everyone who knows about this secret library can take one book and protect to the end of his life.

Daniel takes The Shadow of the Wind by Julian Carax and for now, he must keep it. He reads it at home and absolutely fascinated by it. After that, he tries to find other works by the same author and failed. All he will now in short time, that one strange man is buying books written by Julian Carax. But he buys them not to read, but to burn them…

The critics of the United States of America assigned the novel a grade of A., For example, the Entertainment Weekly describes The Shadow of the Wind as "marvelous book".
